Did you know that Mango is the national fruit in the Philippines?
Mango is the national fruit of the Philippines. The Philippine mango or "mangga" is grown in many parts of the country and comes in different varieties including Indian mango, carabao mango, honey mango (sweet mango) and manila mango. The golden color of the mango signifies richness and a heart shape symbolizes human anatomy which made the Manila mango the national fruit of the country.
Story Time
Mango is my personal all time favourite fruit along with my family. We even have a mango tree at home. I remember when I was young my cousins and I would harvest them and my Lola (Grandmother) would say "no" and would yell at us "it is not ripe yet!!!''. But me and my cousins were stubborn. We ate them anyway!
There are so many ways to eat mango. Filipinos love to eat unripe mango and dip it in rock salt or shrimp paste, weird right? But it is so tasty. Filipinos usually make mango as a dessert like the famous mango float and mango shakes as well. Mango of course works well as snack anytime of day.
What you'll need
- Mango -The only available mango in the store is Alphonso mango. I used perfectly ripe Alphonso mango, make sure it is not overripe or underripe. I love these type of mango because of the sweetness and subtle floral notes.
- Lettuce - you can also use Kale.
- Avocado - For a topping, you can mix them together but I prefer to eat it by itself.
- Cucumber - I always add cucumber on my salad, i just love them.
- Tomatoes - I used grape tomatoes, any kind of tomatoes will work.
- Carrots - Julienned.
- Red onions - This brings a delicious kick of heat. I suggest you use Red onions.
- Cilantro - I love the minty flavour.
- Vinegar - I used cane vinegar (Datu Puti) but feel free to experiment. You can use rice vinegar or white vinegar.
- Fish Sauce - You can use light soy sauce if you want.
- Sesame Oil - I just love the flavour and the aromatic effect. You can use olive oil as well.
- Lemon juice - Squeeze of lemon
- Honey - You can substitute with sugar.
- Salt and Pepper - To taste.
