    Taho (Filipino Sweet Tofu)

    Taho (Filipino Sweet Tofu) is a famous sweet dessert or snack in the Philippines made from silken tofu, brown sugar syrup and tapioca pearls.

    When I was in the Philippines, every morning I would hear a man yelling, "TAHO! TAHO! TAHO!". This dessert was one of my favourite sweet treats and I am sure you will love it too. This is part of every Filipinos routine. They would wait outside and bring their empty glasses to have it filled with Taho. This recipe brings back memories.

    WHAT IS TAHO?

    Taho is a street snack made of just three ingredients: tofu (soft or silken), arnibal (brown sugar syrup), and tapioca pearl(sago). It is usually served warm or at room temperature. Taho can be eaten as a light breakfast or as an afternoon snack.

    INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR TAHO (FILIPINO SWEET TOFU)

    INGREDIENT NOTES

    • Tofu: silken or soft tofu will work fine with this recipe.
    • Brown Sugar: brown sugar is a must! This serves as the syrup for the taho (filipino sweet tofu).
    • Tapioca Pearls/ Sago: plain or coloured tapioca/sago is fine. You can buy them in any Asian store.

    STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

    Step 1: In a medium pot, add water and bring it to boil. Add in dried tapioca pearls. Stir to prevent pearls from sticking together. Let it boil for 45 minutes and boil to low heat for another 15 minutes or until pearls are soft. Set it aside!

    Step 2: In a small saucepan combine water and brown sugar. Bring it to boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for 5-6 minutes. Remove from the heat and set it aside.

    Step 3: Place soft tofu in a parchment lined steamer. Steam for about 10-15 minutes until heated through.

    Assembling Taho (Filipino Sweet Tofu)

    Scoop a thin layer of soft tofu. Place it in serving glass. Drizzle few teaspoons of arnibal (brown sugar syrup). Add tapioca pearls and repeat layering until glass is full and voila!

    Ingredients
      

    • 300 grams soft tofu

    Arnibal/Brown Sugar Syrup

    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup water

    Tapioca Pearl/Sago

    • 1 cup tapioca / sago
    • 5-6 cups water

    Instructions
