    Filipino Salabat (Homemade Ginger Tea), is a soothing and heartwarming homemade tea. Made with fresh boiled ginger, and a touch of lemon and some honey for a sweet-spicy flavour!

    Ginger is a simple and well known ingredient known for its many health benefits. It's perfect for rainy day or a quick natural remedy for sore throat that is inexpensive.

    I remember when I was little, my Mom would always make this whenever I was sick. In its boiled state, the steam from the pot can help with nasal congestion as well. It's probably the go-to natural remedy in Filipino culture.

    Salabat is a Filipino term that refers to ginger tea made from ginger root. It's a popular hot/cold beverage in the Philippines, known to act as a natural remedy for colds or sore throat. It can also simply be enjoyed for it's soothing and comforting qualities.

    There are so many health benefits of drinking Salabat Tea. It helps alleviate digestive issues like indigestion, bloating, and nausea.

    It is also Anti-Inflammatory and boosts the Immune System. The potential health benefits are numerous, but remember, every person it different and will not always receive the same effects.

    Ingredients Needed

    This recipe is relatively easy to make and requires only a few key ingredients. Here are the basic ingredients you'll need to make Salabat:

    • Ginger: We need fresh ginger root,
    • Lemon: Lemon or Calamansi juice for citrusy flavour.
    • Water
    • Honey or Sugar: For some sweetener. (optional)

    How to make it

    Making homemade ginger tea is relatively easy and simple.

    Bring water and ginger to boil for 7 minutes.

    Remove the pot from the heat and strain the tea into a cup to remove the ginger pieces. To sweeten the tea, you can add honey or sugar to taste.

    While the traditional salabat tea made from ginger root, there are also various variations and ways to customize this Filipino hot tea.

    • Ginger Lemon Tea: By adding lemon juice to salabat tea.

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 cups water
    • 1 piece ginger 1-inch chunk, peeled
    • lemon slices
    • honey or sugar to sweeten, optional

    Instructions
     

    • Wash the ginger root thoroughly to remove any dirt. Peel and slice the ginger into thin rounds or crush it with the back of a knife.
    • In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. You can adjust the amount of water depending on how strong you want the tea to be.
    • Once the water is boiling, add the sliced or crushed ginger to the pot.
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the ginger simmer in the water for about 7 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and strain the tea into a cup to remove the ginger pieces.
    • If you like, you can add a squeeze of calamansi or lemon juice to the tea for a citrusy twist. And add honey or sugar to sweeten it.
    • Best served hot.
